SASS Footwear Requirements

Every so often, someone asks the question "Are these <boots, shoes, mocassins, etc.> legal for SASS? Seems like a lot of people have opinions on the correct answer to that, and quite a few of them are dead wrong. Here's the straight skinny, right from the SASS Manuals:
Applies to all SASS Shooters:
  • OUTLAWED - All types of athletic shoes or combat boots no matter the material from which they are constructed.
    - SASS Shooters Handbook, 14th Edition, Jan 2008

  • ILLEGAL ITEMS - Tennis, running, jogging, aerobic or other modern athletic shoes, combat boots.
    - Range Operations Basic Safety Course - Level I, Ver I, Jan 2008

Applies to the CLASSIC COWBOY/COWGIRL category only
  • All boots must be of traditional design with leather or smooth rubber, nongrip enhancing soles.
    - SASS Shooters Handbook, 14th Edition, Jan 2008

  • ... ladies may choose from the items listed below in order to compete within this category:
Period watch, split riding skirt, bustle, hoops, corset, Victorian style hat (straw allowed), period jewelry, period hair ornaments (e.g., feathers), snood, reticule (period handbag), period lace-up shoes, camisole, bloomers, fishnet stockings, feather boa, cape.
    - Range Officer Training Course - Level II, Ver H, Jan 2008

  • All boots must be of traditional design with leather or smooth rubber non-grip en-hancing soles. Moccasins are not allowed.
    - Range Officer Training Course - Level II, Ver H, Jan 2008

Applies to the "B" WESTERN category only
  • All boots must be of traditional design with fancy stitching or multi-color fancy design with smooth, non-grip enhancing soles. Lace up boots and moccasins are not allowed.
    - SASS Shooters Handbook, 14th Edition, Jan 2008
Please note...

Nowhere does it say "period correct" or "historically accurate". Nowhere does it say "Cowboy" boots. Nowhere does it say that "lugged soles" or "man-made materials" are unacceptable, except as noted above.

Keep these things in mind the next time a member of the self-styled 'Costume Police' criticizes your footwear. You might get a good laugh at their ignorance.
